Welcome to our website
If you are mildly obsessive about your wine, enjoy drinking it, and learning about new varieties from around the world, and how they are made, then you will enjoy our Club, its monthly tastings, events, and all it has to offer.
Importantly, our programme of monthly tastings and presentations are led by wine trade professionals and WSET qualified wine educators. The common bond is their love of all things wine, an impressive knowledge of wine and wine making – and an ability to inform, entertain and amuse!
However, The Club is not all about serious learning. There is most definitely a social side – meetings are friendly, inclusive and informal. New friendships are made and old established ones maintained.
Added to all this is the ambience of Bookham’s Grade II listed Old Barn Hall where we meet. It maybe over 100 years old but it has been superbly maintained and modernised, providing first class facilities, including a full screen and projection set-up, and a modern kitchen with a wine cooler – perfect for our needs!
See below for our next wine tastings and click here to see our Programme for 2025.

Sparkling wine – more than just Champagne presented by Andrew Melville
Monday 12th May 2025 at 8pm
We all like to celebrate with something sparkling but does it have to be Champagne? This region has a well-established global reputation for being a benchmark in the production of sparkling wines using the traditional method. However, are there other regions elsewhere that use the same method but represent better value or different tasting experiences? Andrew Melville DipWSET will host this tasting and will provide an overview of the method of production, an exploration of different regions and grape varieties. This should provide some different ideas for your next celebration or even if you just fancy this style of wine at any other time.
Looking East: hidden gems from Eastern Europe – presented by Heather Dougherty, president of Bookham Wine Club
Monday 9th June 2025 at 8pm
Eastern Europe is a vast area that stretches from the borders of Germany and Austria to the Black Sea. In wine terms, it is a real tale of ancient and modern. It covers a multitude of countries, many with centuries-long traditions of wine-making, which seems to have originated in the Caucasus (modern day Georgia).
During the Cold War era, those countries under Soviet control saw their ancient vineyards collectivised and the focus very much quantity over quality. The story since then is often one of recovering and rediscovering old wine estates, combined with a determination to use the best of new technology in the winery to bring winemaking into the modern day. Elsewhere, while winemaking may have a long tradition, we are just starting to discover their wines now.
Prepare to encounter new grape names, as well as more familiar international varieties and a wide range of styles, from light, aromatic whites to full-bodied reds.
Wonderful wines from Mountain and Volcanic regions of the World – presented by Anna Midcalf AWE member
Monday 14th July 2025 at 8pm
Come and discover wines grown in some of the most challenging environments. These wines are terroir driven and very often accompanied by interesting stories of heroic viticulture. The tasting will be led by Anna Midcalf DipWSET who promises us a fascinating look into how and why these wineries persevere in such tough, extreme conditions. The reward will be a selection of wonderful wines of distinctive styles, some from familiar grape varieties, others perhaps new discoveries.
